STAX - Memphis, TN
STAX Records in Memphis, TN was not only a pioneer of Spectra Sonics equipment but also Southern Soul Music and Civil Rights. The studio's staff, artists and bands were integrated (notably Booker T. and the MG's) in the 1960s when Memphis and the rest of the South suffered from segregation and racial tension. Originally STAX was outfitted with two Sigma tube mixers but in 1966 the control was upgraded to a custom 16 channel Spectra Sonics console. Later the in 1970s both Studio A and B were upgraded again with Spectra Sonics consoles. Otis Redding, Booker T and the MGs, Rufus Thomas, Wilson Pickett, Sam and Dave, Isaac Hayes, Albert King are just a few of the artists that recorded on the Spectra console during this time.
